Testimony Hymn Magic Crayon

Teaching hymns in singing time can be a great way for your primary children to feel more included in sacrament meeting. It’s so fun to see their heads pop up when they hear a familiar song being sung in sacrament!

The hymn, Testimony (archives) is a pretty short song that teaches about the Spirit that we feel when we share our testimonies with others. To help your primary children better understand the message of this song, draw pictures to help you visualize each line!

How to Play:

Sing through the first verse of the hymn, Testimony (lyrics here) at the beginning of singing time.

“Today I brought my magic crayon to singing time! You can’t see it, but you can imagine the beautiful colors and shapes!” Pretend to draw in the air while you encourage the children to imagine they have their own magic crayon.

We’re going to draw this song together. Have the children watch closely as you draw a pair of sunglasses in the air while singing the first phrase of the song. Can you guess what I drew?

Even if we can’t always see with our eyes, we can see through eyes of faith. Sing through the line again, and have the kids join you in drawing with their own magic crayons.

Then, sing the next line as you draw a lightbulb together. What might this light represent? Explain that our testimonies can be like a lightbulb, helping us see when things are dark around us.

As you sing the third line, draw a cloud to represent ascending to Heavenly Father. Then, draw a heart while singing the line, “Father of my Soul.”

Do you remember all the shapes we used? Let’s sing through the song again and see if we can remember. Go through the entire song again as you create your beautiful artwork in the air!

Share your testimony at the end and thank everyone for participating and creating such beautiful pictures with their magic crayons!

Magic Crayon Spiritual Tie-In:

For this activity, I chose shapes that could easily coordinate with each line of this song. To further help your primary children understand the message of this song, you might share a quick thought about how each shape fits in with the song as you draw.

Sunglasses: As you draw a pair of sunglasses in the air, think about how faith is like a pair of glasses. Even though we may not be able to see Jesus Christ, our faith helps us see His influence in our lives.

Create this shape while singing the line, “The witness of the Holy Ghost,”

Lightbulb: Light is often a symbol of knowledge. As we gain a testimony, the light of Christ can fill our lives. Our testimonies can help us feel peace, just like turning on a light in the darkness.

Use this shape for this line, “As borne by those who know,”

Cloud: Clouds often remind me of heaven. When we share our testimonies, we can feel a little closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Create this shape as you sing, “Has liften me again to thee,”

Heart: Heavenly Father loves us so much. As you draw this shape, think about His love for you.

Draw the heart shape while singing the line, “O Father of my soul.”

Extension Activities:

  • Instead of choosing an image for each line, sing one line at a time and ask the children what image could represent each line. You might be surprised by their answers! Try a few different ideas as you sing.
  • Make it a guessing game! Sing through the entire song once while drawing each shape in the air. Can you guess which shapes I drew? Try breaking it down line by line as you sing.
  • Follow the Leader! This version is similar to the idea above, but with a child leading the group. Choose someone to come to the front and whisper the shape to them. Have them draw the shape as you all sing the line. Guess which shape they drew!
  • Tape one shape in each corner of the room. Have groups of children stand in each corner and sing a line of the song while drawing the shape in the air. Rotate clockwise until everyone has had a chance to draw every shape!
