I can’t think about a New Year’s Eve from my past without the song lyrics… “I hope you’ve had the time of your life…” slipping in right alongside the rest of my memories. It may just be a product of growing up in the 90s, but I love that song and it’s helped inspired today’s fun singing time idea for the New Year!
The idea is to throwback to some of your favorite songs from the past or introduce your new songs for the year ahead with a variety of cute different ways we keep time. I’ve also included singing speed cards you can use on the fly with any lesson plan.

Time of Your Life Song Game
How to Play:
Let a child randomly pick one of your timekeeping pieces. You can bring in actual objects or use the printable graphics below.
Share how the item helps us keep track of time. You can tie each item to a specific song title or use a selection of a song or two to use through the whole lesson.

Just like each item has a different way to record time, we’ll sing the song with a different cadence of time! Find the matching color time speed card or let the child randomly select a card.
Wrap up the lesson plan by sharing how we are given this precious time on earth (and in Singing Time!) to show our willingness to follow the Savior. It’s not a fast forward process, it’s a day-by-day opportunity to choose Him!

Singing Speed Cards
I created these adorable singing speed cards modeled after an old VCR player (or Blu-ray player). They’re classic icons that you can use over and over throughout the year with any activity!

- Reverse – Sing the last verse first or sing the chorus first
- Normal Speed – Sing at normal speed
- Fast Forward – Sing faster speed
- Super Speed – Sing without piano at super speed!
- Stop and Go – Use a stop sign to completely stop singing at surprise intervals
- Pause – Sing only one part of the song (chorus, one line, the 2nd verse, etc)
- Record – Sing with your BEST performance!
- Eject – Skip the selected song and let the children pick a favorite song!

Extension Activities:
- Bring in VHS tapes or a variety of different ways to remember the past (DVD, Pictures, Polarid, Camera, Cell phone, Etc). Assign a specific song from “the past” to each item.
- You can use our printable VHS tapes to assign song names and make a pretend VHS player with the speed cards. Let a child pick a VHS tape, “load” it into the VHS player, then push a button for the singing mode!

- Print 2 of each of the timekeepers and play a game of match as you countdown!
- Write down different resolutions or goals and match each one to a themed song! Like:
- Visit the Temple – I Love to See the Temple
- Read my Scriptures – Search, Ponder and Pray
- Make New Friends – Kindness Begins with Me
- Share the Gospel with my Friends – I Want to Be a Missionary Now
- Use the speed card with a fun twist! Shuffle them in with the timekeeper cards and then if drawn follow one of the following actions:
- Pause – Take a pause on the current game and sing a wiggle song
- Eject – Pick any card from the deck and remove it from the game
- Reverse – Shuffle the cards and try again
