The kids will love tying in colorful ribbon wands while teaching When I Am Baptized with this fun game and activity! I’ve created two different ribbon wand patterns – a simple pattern for Junior Primary and a challenge pattern for Senior primary!

When I Am Baptized – Ribbon Wands

I usually have the kids sing through the song with me once before I let them in on what the activity will be.

Next, I ask them to observe while I demonstrate the pattern or activity the second time through singing.

That means, we get through singing usually 2-3 times before the activity begins. Then, I let them join in on the fun. If you only have wands for half your Primary, it’ll give you the excuse to have the kiddos share and sing through the song twice as many times – as they’ll all want a couple of turns to try the pattern!

I didn’t love my ribbon wands, as they just had a little plastic cap that falls off (and the ribbons with it) so I grabbed a set of these that are great for singing time! They are really long, but so colorful and fun! Add them to your Amazon shopping cart so you can find them again when you have a budget to work with!

This lesson plan inspired my Ribbon Wand Action Cards printables! Those are available over in my digital shop. I spent a ton of time getting them just right and they will be an awesome resource in your Primary supplies!

Junior Ribbon Wands Pattern:

I plan to use a simple repeating pattern – one for the first verse only as my Junior’s will still need practice and some of the younger kids will just be learning this song.

  • Arch – Arm wide right to left forming an arch overhead.
“I like to look for rainbows”

  • Rain – Hold wand at the top and wiggle so it looks like rain.
    “Whenever there is rain”

  • Repeat Arch and Rain patterns 3 more times each through the end of the song.

If you’d like another pattern to try for the 2nd verse, you can move on to this pattern:

  • Snake – Swiggle with small up and down movements like a snake to represent water
“I know when I am baptized”

  • Zig Zag – Pull the ribbon up and down like drawing sharp zig zags out in front of you
    “my wrongs are washed away”

  • Repeat Snake & Zig Zag 3 more times each through the end of the song.

Senior Ribbon Wands Pattern:

I plan to use this same pattern for both the first and second verse for Senior Primary.

  • Arch – Arm wide right to left forming an arch overhead
“I like to look for rainbows”

  • Rain – Hold wand at the top and wiggle so it looks like rain
    “whenever there is rain”

  • Figure 8 – Draw a figure out in front of you
“and ponder on the beauty of”

  • Circle in Front – Draw a large circle in front of you
    “an earth made clean gain”

  • Zig Zag – Pull the ribbon up and down like drawing sharp zig zags out in front of you
“I want my life to be as clean”

  • Upward Sweep – Sweep the ribbon wand from the bottom corner across in front of you to the top corner.
    “as earth right after rain”

  • Zig Zag – Pull the ribbon up and down like drawing sharp zig zags out in front of you
“I want to be the best I can”

  • Upward Sweep – Sweep the ribbon wand from the bottom corner across in front of you to the top corner.
    “and live with God again.”

Watch for our next activity, When I Am Baptized Singing Bee, for another great way to teach this song. Since most of the Senior Primary already know it, it gives you an excuse to challenge them during Singing Time!
