Your primary kids will love tying these festive actions with this 4th of July Wave a Flag Patriotic Actions singing time idea!
For a fun movement review activity, grab some small American Flags for your primary kids to hold during singing time. While you review songs, have them learn some patriotic actions!
4th of July Wave a Flag Patriotic Actions
Did you know we have an entire post dedicated to 4th of July singing time activities? You can find lots of festive red, white, and blue ideas that are easy to put together! We know that summer time can get pretty busy, so we’re here to help!
Grab some simple mini flags for your primary children. You will want one for each child unless you plan to have them take turns. This could be a great idea for a larger primary! You can grab this set of 50 Small American Flags on Amazon or find some at your closest Walmart.
Then, choose 3-5 songs that you want to review in primary or learn a patriotic primary song from this list!
Print off Patriotic Actions cards found in the printable. There are 9 different actions to choose from! Cut and fold these cards and put them in a jar or bowl.
At the beginning of primary, start by reviewing one of your primary songs. Then, start passing out flags to each teacher to give to their class.
Before passing out the flags, talk about the symbolism and importance of the American flag. What does the flag represent? How should we treat the flag? Remind the children to be reverent and respectful as they hold the flags (Ex. Not letting their flags touch the ground).
Have a child come choose an action from the jar. Explain and demonstrate the action. Try it a few times together, then add in the music! Have the children do the action while singing the song!
Then, choose another action! You can switch songs after every run-through or decide how many times you’ll sing each song before moving on (ex. 3 times each song). Be sure to collect all the flags at the end!
Extension Activities:
- See what other patriotic actions your primary children can think of. Add it to the list of actions while you sing! Ex. Statue of Liberty – hold the flag still. You can also pull ideas from this 110+ Ways to Sing Primary Songs post!
- Choose two actions at a time. Start with one action, then switch to the other action halfway through the song!
- Divide the group into 3-4 small groups. Have each group do a different action while they sing.
- Choose a few actions and create a simple pattern to use throughout the song. You might choose some key words for each action or switch actions every line.
All 9 Patriotic Actions
- Raise the Flag Up – Raise the flag up as high as you can!
- Point to a Spot – Point to a specific spot in the room – such as the clock, a flag on the whiteboard, etc.
- Wave without your Arms – Wave the flag back and forth trying not to move your hand from it’s spot.
- Swirl the Flag – “Swirl” the flag winding it up on the stick
- Swish the Flag – Swish the flag back and forth slowly moving your arm like a windshield wiper
- Draw a Star – Use your flag to draw a star in the air with the tip of the flag.
- Draw a Heart – Use your flag to draw a heart in the air with the tip of the flag.
- Lower the Flag – Hold the flag near your head, then swish it forward until your arm is at a 90* angle.
- Lead the Music – Hold your flag like a conducting wand and lead the music!

4th of July Wave a Flag Patriotic Actions Printable Cards
These cute & festive printable action cards are a great addition to this activity! This printable includes 9 small action cards to print and post on the board or have the kids draw from a jar.
