Have you ever taught Tell Me Dear Lord to your Primary children? It’s one of the song picks for November New Testament Primary Songs list, which means it may be often overlooked as you’re getting close to Christmas.
In this Tell Me Dear Lord Word Order activity, you’ll rearrange each of the word cards until they’re in the correct order. It’s a great way to teach the song line by line or use it as a challenge once they’ve learned the song for review.
Tell Me Dear Lord Word Order
How to Play:
Sing through Tell Me Dear Lord (flip chart here) once, before introducing this activity. I like to do that as a signal to the kids we are switching gears or getting started with singing time.
Then, post all of the cut out words all over the board or on a table. Let a child come up front and try to rearrange the words in order while you all sing together. Your first helper won’t make too much progress, but they should be able to get a few words in the right order.
Point out the phrase in the right order, that’s great look here’s the first line! Let’s keep going! Who can help next and help get more words in the correct order.
When you have them in the right order, let the kids remove or flip over select words. Can they still sing all the words even with some of them missing? This is a great way to help build those memory connections!
Extension Activities:
- You can have several helpers come up front to work on rearranging the words together. This should make it a little easier and not go so long.
- Work by building the song line by line instead. Sing through the first line on repeat until it’s all in the right order. Now, sing the first and 2nd line adding the additional line unscrambled into the right sequence. Continue through the song.
- Unscramble word phrases instead for an easier challenge! Put them all up on the board one below the other in one column. Then, have them switch any two between each time you sing until they’re all in the right spots!
- Decode what some of the color backgrounds might represent. Red = Love, Orange = Self, Yellow = “W” words, Blue = Learning themed words, Purple = References to Diety, and Yellow are all the other words.
