How to Play:

Sing through Behold the Great Redeemer Die (flipchart here) before introducing this activity.

Put up a poster for the verse you want to work on. There is a shape outlined in colors. Ask the children what do they notice? What shape do they see?

  • Verse 1: A cross (sacrifice)
  • Verse 2: A speech bubble (scoffs & scorns)
  • Verse 3: Up arrow (high commission)
  • Verse 4: Hammer (the work)
  • Verse 5: Flowing line (earth trembled)

Let’s sing through the song again and see if you can point out why we might use this shape to represent this verse. Listen closely for a line of the song that might match!

Did you find a line of the song that matched? What part of the song fits?

Call a helper up to come and follow the pattern, starting at the green arrow, and try to find the first word. Write it up on the board when they find it and color over that part of the picture map.

Sing through the song between each helper and then continue to add the words to the board through the first line. When the first line is added, ask oh – did you notice that line of the song? How many times do we sing it? (2). Look, our pattern is about halfway done. I wonder if we’ll get the second line to finish the pattern!

Extension Activities:

  • Start with the uncolored version of the follow the letters map instead. You can put the word bank up on the board for younger kids or for a harder challenge let them say the next word and work together to find the correct next letters and color in the picture as they go!
  • Use multiple posters to help represent the different verses you might be teaching. Have the kids help you put them in the correct order. Come up with an action for each of the verse that coordinate with the repeating line of the song and the picture puzzle.
