Father’s Day Try a Tie!
We have lots of fun Father’s Day singing time ideas! From movement activities to shadow puppets, there are so many different ways to celebrate Father’s Day in singing time!
Father’s Day, along with Mother’s Day can sometimes be a sensitive holiday for some people. If you have primary children who have lost their father or do not currently have a righteous father in their home, this holiday can be pretty tough. However, you can help the children appreciate righteous men in their lives.
This review activity is very light-hearted, and can be a fun activity for both Junior and Senior primary kids! Hopefully this activity can be a way for all your primary kids to feel included while you review for Father’s Day.
I love how simple and fun this activity can be! With very little supplies, you can help the primary children review Father’s day songs while thinking about the examples of righteous priesthood holders in their lives.
All you have to do to prepare for this activity is gather 10-15 different ties. To save some time during primary, tie all the ties loosely beforehand. If you have a thrift store near you, they might have some fun ties too!
At the beginning of primary, start by reviewing your Father’s Day song once through. Look for a child who is singing reverently. Then, bring out Dad’s ties! Put them in a small tote or display them on the table.
Choose a child to come up and try on one of Dad’s ties! You may have to help them tighten the tie a little for it to fit. Have them lead the song while wearing a fun tie. Then, choose someone else to come up and lead the song!

Review Your Father’s Day AND Mother’s Day Songs in the Same Week!
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are only about a month apart, so it can be tricky to fit in time to review both songs! For a fun way to connect your Mother’s Day and Father’s Day lessons, pair this try a tie idea with this Mother’s Day In Her Shoes activity!
Bring 8-10 pairs of shoes to go along with your ties. Have someone come to the front of the room and choose to wear either a tie or a pair of shoes. If they choose the shoes, sing a Mother’s Day song! If they choose a tie, sing a Father’s Day song!
Extension Activities:
- Review a few different Father’s Day songs by organizing the ties by color or pattern. Have each color represent a different song. Whenever a child comes up and chooses the tie, sing the song that corresponds with that color of tie!
- Come up with some different ways to sing the song! Have each pattern of tie corresponds with a different way to sing. For example, sway back and forth if the tie has stripes! Jump up and down while singing if the tie has polka dots. If the tie is plain, have the kids pretend to be putting on a tie while they sing.
- Choose a key word from the song and have 3 kids come up to the front. Have one of the children start with the tie on loosely. Whenever you sing the key word, have them quickly take the tie off and put it on the child next to them.
- Pass the tie! Pass a tie around the room until the music stops. When the music stops, have the child holding the tie say or sing the next few words of the song.
