Easter Hosanna Action Words
Hand actions are probably in my personal list for the best ways to teach a primary song. The reason I love this type of activity so much is because it gives a concrete representation of the lyrics that the children can easily remember later on!
For this particular song, I decided to keep it super simple and use just a few hand actions! Most of the hand actions in this pattern can be used for a full phrase of the song, and a few are used for specific words.
Let’s learn some actions! Start by reviewing the first verse and chorus with this Easter Hosanna flip chart at the beginning of singing time.
To help us remember the words to this song, we’re going to learn some actions! Post the action words printable on the board.
Let’s look at the first picture. What action might this be? Cup your hands around your mouth and pretend like you are speaking in a microphone. This action will be used when we sing “prophecies.”
Continue trying out the actions as you say or sing each line. I recommend taking it line by line before trying the entire pattern. One way to do this is to say each line using the action and have the children repeat it back to you.
Then, try the phrase with music! By teaching a little bit at a time, you can help your primary children remember the lyrics while staying engaged the whole time!
Are you ready to try the entire song? Let’s do it! Sing though the whole song with the action words. Practice a few more times as your primary children get more comfortable with the actions. This is a great way to get in lots of repetition!

Prophecies -> Cup your hands around your mouth like an imaginary microphone.
Long Ago -> Sweep your arm behind your shoulder with your palm facing up.
Now at Last Fulfilled -> Make a big Thumbs up by closing your little fingers and holding out your thumb.
Risen From the Dead -> Raise your arms with both palms facing upward.
Came Down From Heav’n Above -> Lower your arms with palms facing down.
People of the Promised Land -> Point to someone around you, then point to yourself.
Received their Lord and Cried -> Wrap yourself in a big hug!
Hosanna -> Make big smile and point to your mouth. You can also put your hands in the air to cheer!
Blessed Be the Name of the Most High God -> Fold your arms or press your palms together to pray.
Extension Activities:
- Add some more of your own actions! Have the kids help you come up with a few more actions to add to the song! Here are a few you might add –> For the word, “Now” point down. To illustrate the phrase, “White-robed and glorified,” close both fists and mimic putting a coat over your shoulders.
- On one side of the board, write out each phrase. Cut out the action symbols and see if the kids can match each action to its phrase!
- Hum or clap on keywords from the action words pattern! Hum or clap on the words, “Prophesied,” “Long ago,” “Fulfilled,” “Risen,” “Down,” “People,” Received,” “Hosanna,” and “Blessed.”
- Split the class into 3 groups! Have one group take the first row of hand actions, have the second group take the second row, and have the third group do the actions for the chorus!
