I love using a melody map as it’s a strong visual that helps the children connect with the movement of the lyrics with the music and you can even incorporate some logical thinking activities with a crack the code type element!

Easter Hosanna Melody Map
Sing through Easter Hosanna (flip chart here) once, then introduce this melody map.
Post the melody pages in order from left to right, if you have enough space.
Have the children hold their hand out horizontally and follow the movement on the melody map moving their hand upward and downward along with the melody chart.
After you sing through the song the first time, as the children what the noticed as they followed the pattern.
Discuss 1-2 of the things they noticed. They might point out things such as:
- What the symbols might represent
- The repeating melody of the first and 2nd line of the song
- That the notes go up and down like a staircase
- The chorus isn’t exactly the same – even though you sing the same words
- The lines of the melody map are different colors (one color per song line)
- Each page is exactly one line of the song that you sing
Sing through the song again as you check out the different things the children point out and notice. Make sure to make a big deal out of how awesome their observations are and praise their critical thinking! It’ll help you get more answers in the future and engage with the kids participating.
Extension Activities:
- Shuffle up the melody map pages and have the kids help you rearrange them back into the correct order as you sing through the song! There’s lots of clues on each page to help them figure out the right direction (which rotation to face each page) as well as the page order.
- Add an action to go along with each of the symbols on the melody map. For example, you might hold out a scroll for prophecies and draw a swirling circle for long ago that match the icons on the chart.
- Flip one page over and sing the flip over page with a special style – maybe opera, cowboy, robot, or underwater style. Then continue back to a normal singing style when you move on to the next line. This will help the children give special focus to following your lead and keeping on track in the song.
- Print out a smaller version of the melody map by choosing to print multiple pages per single printed page in your printer settings. Cut them into individual pieces and let the kids assemble the melody map together in small groups!
