I Know That My Redeemer Lives Say & Sing

Teaching hymns in primary can be a fun challenge! When I was a music leader for primary, my kids loved when the songs they learned in singing time came up during sacrament meeting! Teaching the hymns can help kids feel more included and engaged in sacrament meeting.

However, hymns can present a unique challenge in that they are usually longer than most primary songs. The hymn, I Know That My Redeemer Lives has 4 beautiful verses. Whether you are teaching just one verses or all 4 verses of this song, you’ll love the simplicity of this say and sing activity!

The idea behind this activity is to teach the song by speaking and singing one line at a time. As the kids repeat after you, this will break down the song into smaller chunks and make it easier to learn!

If you are introducing this song for the first time, begin by having your pianist play the song while the kids listen. Alternatively, you could play an instrumental version of the song through a speaker.

I’ve created a printable with word strips for each line of the first verse. Cut out the word strips and post the first line on the board. Say the first line of the song, having the kids repeat after you. Then, sing the line. Again, have the kids repeat the melody.

Continue introducing the song one line at a time. Be sure to say the line, then sing it. Continue this pattern for the entire verse.

Once you have gone through the entire song, try singing it with the accompaniment slowly using our flipchart!

You might have a brief discussion about how the children have felt Christ’s love for them. At the end of primary, share your testimony of the Savior. Sharing your testimony can help invite the spirit and help the children remember the message of the song.

If you are reviewing the song, choose a few keywords from the song. Each time one of these words comes up in the song, SAY the word instead of singing it.

In the printable, you’ll find a chart with 9 keywords from the song. Just cut out these cards and choose a few at a time to say instead of sing!

Here are some keywords I chose from the first verse:

  • Redeemer
  • Lives
  • Soul
  • Bless
  • Love
  • Need
  • Plead
  • Hungry
  • Comfort

This activity is easily adaptable to fit any of the verses you are teaching. Simply write the lyrics on the board one line at a time and have the kids repeat after you. Super easy!

3 Extension Activities:

  • Try out different silly voices! Once you’ve chosen keywords for the song, choose a silly voice to try. Use the same voice for the entire song! Some examples: whisper, robot, pirate, choir singer, valley girl, cowboy/cowgirl, frog, dog, cat,
  • Have the kids arrange the printed lines in order! For an extra challenge, write or type each line of all 4 verses! Have the children sort through the lines and determine which line belongs to each verse!
  • Have each group take on 1-2 lines of the song! Sing through the verse and have each group listen quietly until it’s their turn to sing!
