I adore this sweet and easy song Mother Dear (archives). It’s one of my Mother’s Day song of choice this year, and perfect if you’re short on time to teach a song.

Mother Dear Dance Scarves

Sing through Mother Dear with this flip chart once, before introducing this activity.

Post the Mother Dear Dance Scarves pattern for the 1st verse. Can you see the pattern? How does it match the song lyrics? Let’s sing and try out the actions – listen closely to see how the pattern might match each line of the song!

Draw the actions with your finger in the air to practice once, before handing out dance scarves.

Draw a heart as you sing “Mother dear, I love you so,” next draw a smiley face as you sing “your happy, smiling face,” continue by drawing a swirl that moves inward as you sing “is such a joy to look at,” and finish by drawing a house as you sing “it makes home a lovely place.”

What is something your mother does that makes your home a happy place? (Smiles!) Let’s smile big as we sing through the song again and use our dance scarves with the actions. Pass out dance scarves and try the actions as you sing through the song again.

Sing through Mother Dear as you use dance scarves a few more times, then invite a class to come up front to lead the actions while everyone follows along.

Extension Activities:

• Continue onto the activity using the additional dance scarves patterns for the 2nd and 3rd verse to extend this activity.
• Challenge kids to think about something they can do to show their mother how much they love them! Invite them to draw out the thing they can do as you sing through the song again another time.

• Let the children help you come up with their own patterns to try to match each line of the song! Which dance scarf patterns should you mix up? Try with a brand new pattern and combination! You can mix and match the cards to make it new each time.
