This egg shaker idea is a great way to get in lots of repetition while keeping everyone engaged during singing time. Grab some egg shakers or make your own egg shakers (DIY instructions) with just a few materials.
For this activity, simply pick a few keywords from the song. I’ve included a printable lyrics sheet with highlighted keywords to add a visual element as you follow along. Listen carefully and shake your eggs when you hear these words!
The simplicity of this activity lends to a lot of flexibility and room for creativity! I’ve included a bunch of additional rhythm patterns or “challenges” later in this post. Take a glance and see if they spark any ideas!
How to Play:

Extension Activities:
- Shake on every syllable. Words such as “sun-shine” and “mor-ning” will get two shakes.
- Color Code – Yellow = Double Shake, Blue Shake = Knee Tap, Purple = Fast Shake
- Divide the room in half. Alternate shaking on every other word. For example, the left side of the room would shake on “Like…in..morning…wakens…from” and the right side would shake on “sunshine…the..that..day…night”
- Write all the keywords on strips of paper. Pick a volunteer to choose 2-3 keywords at a time. Listen carefully and shake only on these keywords!
- Split into 3 groups – one for each color. Have each class sing and shake on their assigned color. Have the teachers sing all the words in black.
- Use your shakers to draw some of these shapes! For example, shake in a big circle as you sing the phrase, “sunshine in the morning.” Create a flower in the air as you sing, “flowers in the springtime.”
