Shine On Prophet’s Words
When I was a primary music leader, I was always thinking about ways to tie in gospel principles during singing time. The songs we teach our primary children can help them learn such wonderful doctrines that will be important throughout their lives.
This simple idea is a powerful way to invite the Spirit into singing time and help your primary children understand the message of this sweet song. For this activity, simply share or have the children read some short quotes about missionary word as you review this sweet song.
Start by collecting some quotes about missionary work or sharing the gospel from recent General Conference sessions. There have been several messages about the Gathering of Israel and member missionary work, especially in the past few years. I’ve compiled a list of 6 quotes from prophets and apostles that go well with this song.
At the beginning of singing time, review the first verse and chorus of Shine On. Be sure to grab your copy of our Shine On flip chart to help you teach the words!
Then, ask the children: Does our prophet today teach us about missionary work? Our prophets and apostles have asked us to take part in the Gathering of Israel by being a light and sharing the gospel with our friends. Let’s hear what they have to say.
Choose a volunteer to come up and read a quote about sharing the gospel. Encourage the children to listen for any blessings promised or any actions we should take.
Each time you read through a quote, sing through the song again. Conclude with your testimony of following the prophet and sharing the gospel with others.

Extension Activities:
- Split the class into 3 groups. On the back of each quote, write one line of the song. Give each class 2 quotes to read together. Then, have each class sing their 2 lines for a fun “popcorn” effect.
- Write a fun way to sing on the back of each quote. Each time you sing through the song, pick a volunteer to come up and choose a quote to read. Then, sing through the song as indicated! Ex. Hop on one foot, Boys only, Girls only, Sing like a pirate, Sing with your teeth closed, etc.
- Find an inspirational video about sharing the gospel to watch at the beginning of singing time. You can find lots of great videos, like this video about sharing the gospel, on the Church’s website.
