Bring this primary song to life with this Tell Me Dear Lord Draw the Song visual intrigue activity! Simply have the kids draw a picture for each line of the song as you review Tell Me Dear Lord in singing time this month!
If you are worried that your artistic skills won’t be up to par? No worries! This activity is super simple and meant to be a fun way to visualize the song to better understand its meaning!
Tell Me Dear Lord Draw the Song
There are so many fun ways to use this draw the song activity! You can do the activity as outlined below, or use one of our many extension ideas! I’ve also included a demo video that explains 3 different ways to play!
I’ve included a printable later in this post with blank posters for each line of the song! Before primary, gather some simple art materials, like crayons and colored pencils. Review the first verse of Tell Me Dear Lord at the beginning of singing time.
Post 4 blank posters with one line of the song per page on the board. How could we draw this song? Let’s start with the first line.
Read or sing the first line and have the kids ponder how they could visually represent the first line. Have them raise their hands to share ideas. Invite a few kids to come up and draw while you sing.
Then, move on to the second phrase. Invite a few children to come to the board to contribute to the drawing.
Continue taking turns and drawing pictures for each line of the song. Since there are 4 lines and 4 separate pictures, this can be a great way to collaborate and get everyone involved! Even if some children don’t want to draw, they can offer ideas or lead the class in singing. Sing through the verse as you work on each drawing.
Once you have completed all 4 pictures, sing the song one last time and share a brief testimony about the message of the song.
Draw the Song Ideas:
Line 1: Tell me, dear Lord, in thine own way I pray: For this line, you could draw an image of a child praying near their beside or a family praying together. You could also print a picture of Christ and include it in this picture.
Line 2: What thou would’st have me say and do today: For this line, I drew an image of a girl standing outside with a megaphone to “say” something. You could also draw a missionary or someone serving others.
Line 3: Teach me to know and love thy will, O Lord: Draw a lightbulb to represent “know” and a hear to represent “love.” You could also draw a teacher in a classroom for “teach” or draw two people hugging.
Line 4: Help me to understand thy loving word: For this line, I drew a simple picture of The Book of Mormon to represent His “word.”
Extension Activities:
- Split the class into 4 groups and assign each group one line of the song. Have each group work together to draw a picture for their line. Then, combine all the pictures and sing the song! Have each group sing their line.
- Do this activity 4 corners style! Tape one picture poster on each wall of the primary room. Have a few kids stand on each side. Set a timer for 1-2 minutes. During that time, the group can start drawing a picture for the line. When the timer goes off, switch! Have kids contribute to each drawing! The end result will be super fun and maybe a little bit silly!
- Pass out coloring pages or blank sheets instead! This way, everyone can work on their own drawing while reviewing the song. The Church website has some great coloring pages for primary, like this prayer coloring page!
- Guess the drawing! Begin drawing a simple picture for each line and see if the kids can guess what you are drawing! For an extra challenge, don’t put up the lyrics!
