This fun Teach Me to Walk in the Light Action Code Words Singing Time idea uses a variety of missing words and a hidden code to bring the song to life! Using 3 different learning styles including Logical, Purposeful Movement, and Living Music Learning Styles the kids will be engaged and having fun learning this beautiful song.
The code basis for the game was first used in our Choose the Right Way Missing Words game! We’ve adapted it to Teach Me the Right Way, since this was our Song Planner pick for this song!
Teach Me to Walk in the Light is one of our Old Testament Primary Song Pick! We’ll be sharing a lot more fun singing time ideas to teach this song to come!

Teach Me to Walk in the Light
Action Code Words
This fun movement activity for Teach Me to Walk in the Light will get everyone involved and having fun with a simple code to sing along with!
How to Play:
Start by Singing through Teach Me to Walk in the Light before you introduce this activity. You can grab our Teach Me to Walk in the Light Flip Chart here, if helpful!
Post the movement code word posters included below up on the whiteboard.
Ask the kids what symbols do they see? Do they think they can spot any patterns? Sing through it again and ask them to watch for patterns.
Introduce one action at a time, as the kids give clues and help decode the different words that are missing. For example, clap instead of singing the ***** words for Teach.
Repeat singing and discovering new actions until you’ve cracked the whole code!
Then, sing the action words instead of the written words!
You can easily sing through the song 5-6 times without it getting old, then add in some of our fun extension activities to add even more variety and repetition. We like to use 2-3 different activities per singing time, you can see what that looks like in our Example of a Typical Singing Time post. It’s magical!!
Extension Ideas:
- Have the kids compete! Divide the room into groups. If you have a large Primary, you can make all 5 groups! Otherwise, make 2 groups and have the teacher/leaders do the 5th action. Let each side pick one action going back and forth until all the actions are assigned.
- Have the kids come up with an alternative action for the keycode below.
Key to Crack the Code:
- ++++ = Stomp = Walk
- ***** = Clap = Teach
- ~~~~~ = Jazz Hands = Light
- _ _ _ _ = Patsch = Know / Right
- ^^^^ = Bow Head = Pray / Father
Sample Crack the Code Line:
***** me to ++++ in the ~~~~~ of his love

What other fun ways could you extend this Teach Me to Walk in the Light Action Code Singing Time lesson?
I’m having a hard time visualizing how this game works. Do you have a video of this being done with any song?
I didn’t make a video for this song, sorry if I didn’t make it super clear I’ll try to expound on the directions here. I do have a video for a different song where I talk about using hand actions. Of course, this activity is slightly different as it’s maybe more movement actions then just hand actions. Here’s that video if helpful:

For this one though, you’d just sing all the words like normal, “Teach me to walk in the light of His love…”. But as you sing the words, you would add a particular movement action that pairs with the word (based on the code). So, for example, you’d clap on every reference to “teach” Hidden in the posters as (*****). “Teach (clap) me to walk in the light of His love, Teach (clap) me to…” When they’ve got the clapping down, you can add another action.
Now, we’re going to add in stomping anytime we sing “walk” (++++). “Teach (clap) me to walk (stomp) in the light of His love, Teach (clap) me to…”
You can also skip singing the particular words that aren’t shown. The kids will sing them silently in their heads if they’ve had exposure to those words previously or just even if you make a connection to the action such as stomp for walk, just like we’re walking, stomp, stomp, stomp!
