Using Dance Scarves in Primary
If you’ve never used dance scarves in primary, they can be an excellent way to add color and movement in primary. I got my own set of dance scarves this year and I have LOVED them!
I have used them the most with Junior primary, but they can be fun for Senior primary too!
For an example of a singing time using dance scarves, check out this My Heavenly Father Loves Me Dance Scarves activity.
To make this activity even easier for you, we have a set of Dance Scarves Movement Cards in our shop! I have loved using these cards in singing time. This set include 24 brightly colored action cards to use with dance scarves.
Since this song is not familiar to all and new to many, I want to include a short video of the song if you need a reminder of the melody. I’ve sources 4 fun I Will Walk with Jesus music videos that are a great option to use as a quick reminder before singing time.
I Will Walk With Jesus Dance Scarves Pattern

This activity is pretty simple! All you need to do to prep for this activity is choose 5-6 actions to go with the I Will Walk With Jesus Lyrics. Once you choose your actions, simply write or draw them out on the board and follow the pattern with dance scarves!
Dance Scarves Actions:
Open/Close the Window: For this action, pretend you are opening and closing a window by waving your scarf up and down in the air.
Ex. “Jesus walked in wisdom, Jesus grew in truth,” and “Jesus wants to guide me, Jesus shows the way.”
Wiggle Worm: For this action, bring the scarf from the left side to the right side while wiggling the scarf like a worm! Since this action is used for a longer phrase, you can bring the wiggle worm back to the left side.
Ex. “He showed love to God and man while in his youth,” and “Calling me to come and walk with Him each day.”
Toss and Catch: Simple enough! Just toss the scarf into the air and catch it. You may want to remind children not to throw their scarf too high or it might get lost in the air.
You can use this action for starting the chorus “As I walk with Jesus to my home above” and “Change my heart forever and help me clearly see.”
Wave Hello: For this action, use your dance scarf to pretend you are waving at someone! Simply wave the scarf side to side with your hand facing outward.
“He will bless me with His spirit and fill me with His love,” and “I will walk with Jesus and He will walk with me.”
This pattern is organized by phrases, with each action repeating twice throughout the song. Feel free to add your own actions! You could draw a heart with your scarves for the phrase, “fill me with his love.” Your primary children will have great ideas for actions, too!
- At the beginning of primary, introduce the activity by reviewing the words to I Will Walk with Jesus with this flip chart.
- Pass out scarves and demonstrate each of the 5 dance scarves actions, allowing the children to try the actions out a few times.
- Display the pattern on the board using these Dance Scarves Movement Cards or by drawing out the actions.
- Sing the first verse using the pattern, then ask the children if they’d like to add any actions!
- Try out your new actions for the second verse and continue having fun while reviewing the song.
- Have each class choose their own actions to use with the dance scarves. Have each class “perform” or teach the class their pattern while singing the song.
- Have the children come up with their own actions! Listen to their fun ideas and try a new pattern.
- Have children choose a partner and switch scarves after each verse. You could also have them move around the room to a different seat.
