My Senior primary children especially love playing Primary word games in singing time! Try this fun When He Comes Again Fill in the Blank activity to see how well your primary kids know the lyrics to When He Comes Again!
For this activity, work through the song phrase by phrase and see if you can find the correct word to fill in the blank! Such a fun & simple way to review in primary!

How to Play:
Before primary, print and cut out the word strips. If using pictures to fill in the blank, print and cut out pictures that correspond to each blank.
Review the lyrics to When He Comes Again (flipchart here), reminding the kids to pay special attention to the words. Sing through the song once or twice.
Bring out a few of the lyrics word strips and put them up on the board using tape or magnets. If using pictures, put the corresponding pictures on the board in mixed-up order.
See if the children can think of the correct word to fill in the blank. If they have trouble, you could write the words on the board and have them match the word to the phrase.
Once they solve 2-3 phrases, sing through the song again and solve a few more!
Continue singing through the song until you’ve filled in all the missing blanks!
Here are some examples of some fill in the blank phrases. The words in bold are omitted from the phrase, replaced with a blank.
I wonder when he comes AGAIN
Will HERALD angels sing?
Will earth be WHITE with drifted SNOW
Or will the world KNOW spring?
I wonder if one STAR will shine
After you practice singing through When He Comes Again once, put a few of the mixed up word strips on the board. Have the children try and guess what word is missing! Once you fill in a few blanks, sing through the song again and see if you can guess a few more!
For another fun way to play, put all the word strips on the board. On the other side of the board, write all the missing words. Make sure to mix them up first! Have the children word together to match all the words to their corresponding phrases!
Visuals for Junior Primary:
I created some visuals to make this activity adaptable for Junior primary! If you have lots of little ones in primary, fill-in-the-blank activities may be challenging. However, just swap the words for some pictures and they’ll love it!
I took each of the blanks and looked for a simple picture or symbol to represent the word. During primary, post the word phrases just as you would for the words activity. Then, put the pictures up on the board and mix them up!
Extension Ideas:
- Mix up the fill in the blank cards and have the kids work together to put the song in order!
- Once you’ve correctly filled in all the blanks to the song, sing through it again. This time, sing through the song, clapping on the blanks instead of singing the correct song lyric.
- Print out the phrases with the blanks and put them up on one side of the board. On the other side of the board, put up the pictures. See if the kids can correctly match all the pictures to their corresponding words.
- Randomly pass out all the fill in the blank word strips to teachers. Each class should have no more than 2-3 pieces of paper. Have each teacher read the phrase to their class and sing the phrases they have!
